The Wanderers Association

‘The aim of the association is to promote participation, enjoyment and respect to others regardless of ability.’ – Barrie Waller

The Wanderers is an association of schools with students who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The association was set up to provide students in these schools with the opportunity to compete against each other in sport. John Spence are the only non-special school to be part of that association, having been invited to join in 2004 as a result of all the work the school was doing to support students with special educational needs.

Since 2010, John Spence have also introduced young leaders from years 9 and 10 to help organise and officiate select events. John Spence students are now relied upon by event organisers in the planning of activities; from refereeing football matches to recording times at the association’s annual athletics event held at Monkton Stadium.

There are currently 20 member schools throughout Northumberland.

Activities include 5-a-side Football, Athletics, Rounders, Swimming, Basketball, Table Tennis and Badminton. John Spence annually hosts the Badminton and Rounders events.
